So... what is this light cyan background and that highlighted path (attached screenshot)? I didn't do anything to highlight the path, I just selected a shortest root path in the Type Details view.

The light cyan box is shown when a root path is aligned and it includes all instances and the root that are part of the root path. When you browse through the shortest root paths in the Type details view, the profiler will automatically align the corresponding root paths in the instances graph. Originally we had included the possibility to disable this synchronization, but we removed it since we didn't see a big need to disable the graph synchronization. Is this a feature that you would like to be able to disable?
